Fake Followers Impact ROI – Insights from Our Research Report

Before partnering with an influencer, it’s essential to know how follower quality impacts your ROI. Our data science team analysed 200,000+ commercial posts and found a clear negative correlation between fake followers and campaign performance. The takeaway? Fake followers don’t just hurt reach—they directly reduce conversions, making audience authenticity mission-critical for ROI-driven influencer marketing.

Impact of Fake Followers on Conversions & ROI

To better understand how fake followers affect campaign performance, we analysed over 200,000 influencer posts, categorising influencers into three segments based on their conversion performance:

  • High-performing influencers: More than 10 conversions
  • Medium-performing influencers: 4–10 conversions
  • Low-performing influencers: Fewer than 4 conversions

The data reveals a clear trend: the higher the percentage of real followers, the better the performance. The median fake follower percentage was:

  • 21.5% for high performers
  • 24.7% for medium performers
  • 27.4% for low performers

Influencers with audience credibility above 73.17% consistently achieved stronger conversion rates, emphasising that follower authenticity is a critical metric in driving ROI.
If you’re looking to optimise your influencer campaigns, analysing fake followers isn't optional, it's essential.

Detecting Fake Followers: Key Metrics That Matter

When evaluating Instagram influencers, identifying fake followers is crucial to ensure you're partnering with authentic creators who can drive real results. At Dreabee, we’ve developed a suite of Influencer Hero Metrics designed to assess audience authenticity and engagement integrity — helping brands avoid inflated reach and maximise ROI.
Here are the key metrics we rely on:

icon

Fake Follower Ratio

Measures the estimated percentage of an influencer’s followers that are inactive, bots, or purchased — ensuring audience authenticity.

icon

Engagement Rate (Real vs. Expected)

Compares actual engagement (likes, comments) with expected norms based on follower count to detect artificially inflated numbers.

icon

Follower Growth Pattern

Analyses historical follower trends to uncover unusual spikes that suggest a coordinated effort to boost follower counts through mass purchases.

icon

Authenticity Score

Reviews comment content for depth, variation, and relevance to identify real audience interaction vs. spam or generic bots.

icon

Audience Quality Score

A composite metric that evaluates the credibility of an influencer’s followers using multiple data points like activity and origin.

icon

Like-to-Follower Ratio

Highlights inconsistencies between likes and follower count, which can indicate low engagement or inflated followership.

Follower Growth as a Predictor of ROI

Our analysis of 200,000 influencers who published commercial posts reveals a strong correlation between follower growth and campaign ROI.

  • High-performing influencers (10+ conversions/post) showed a median follower growth rate of 3.2%.
  • Medium performers (3–10 conversions/post) had a growth rate of just 1.0%.
  • Low performers (≤2 conversions/post) even exhibited a negative growth rate.

This trend aligns with platform behaviour: Meta algorithms tend to amplify high-quality content, rewarding creators with increased visibility and organic follower growth. In contrast, low-engagement or inactive influencers often face stagnation or decline in their follower base.

2. Engagement Rate

Engagement rate is one of the most discussed metrics in influencer marketing but how much does it impact ROI?
To answer this, we analysed over 200,000 commercial influencer posts across Instagram and YouTube. Our findings reveal a strong correlation between engagement rate and conversions:

  • High-performing influencers (more than 15 conversions per post) had a median engagement rate of 2.4%.
  • Medium performers (5–15 conversions per post) showed an average rate of 1.5%.
  • Low-performing influencers (fewer than 5 conversions per post) had engagement rates below 0.9%.

This trend confirms that influencers with engaged, active communities consistently drive better results. While vanity metrics like follower count can be inflated, a strong engagement rate typically indicates genuine audience connection which translates to higher ROI.

Total Engagements

When looking at total engagements, the differences between high- and low-performing influencers become even more apparent. However, it’s important to interpret this metric with caution.
Total engagement alone doesn’t account for audience size, and without that context, it can be misleading. A creator with a million followers will naturally gather more likes and comments than one with 50,000 but that doesn't mean they're more effective in driving conversions.
From our analysis of 200,000 posts, we observed:

  • High-conversion influencers had average engagements per post in the range of 12,000–18,000.
  • Medium performers ranged between 4,000–8,000.
  • Low performers often stayed below 2,500 total engagements.

But here's the nuance: this could simply reflect audience size, which did show a moderate correlation with conversions. It’s not yet conclusive whether high engagement leads to conversions, or whether large audiences are the underlying driver of both. That’s why we recommend prioritising engagement rate over total engagement for a clearer performance benchmark.

Audience / Follower Size

The debate around whether micro or macro influencers deliver better ROI has been ongoing. To shed light on this, we analysed 200,000 influencer campaign posts. Our findings revealed that high-performing influencers (those driving over 10 conversions per post) had a median follower count of 112K, while mid-performing influencers (3–9 conversions) averaged around 61K followers, and low-performing influencers (fewer than 3 conversions) had a median of 35K followers.

This suggests that follower size does correlate with performance, especially when surpassing the 75th percentile (approx. 95,000+ followers), where conversion rates significantly improve. However, the story doesn't end there.
Micro and nano influencers, although smaller in reach, often come with lower collaboration costs and higher trust within niche communities. This makes them potentially more cost-effective, especially when budget and target relevance are factored into the ROI equation.

Verified Accounts

One intriguing factor in maximising influencer ROI is whether the influencer holds a verified badge (the blue checkmark) on Instagram. Our analysis of over 200K posts revealed that 61.1% of high-performing influencers (those generating over 10 conversions per post) had verified accounts. This dropped to 34.4% among medium performers (3–9 conversions per post) and further to 26.7% for low performers (fewer than 3 conversions per post).

While this might suggest that verified influencers drive more conversions, it's important to remember that correlation doesn’t imply causation. Verified status is often linked with larger follower bases, which may be the actual driver of better performance. So, while the checkmark can be a helpful indicator, it shouldn’t be used in isolation when selecting influencers.
